Dysphagia occurs for two reasons. Firstly, scarring from reflux causes oesophageal narrowing as above and secondly, the nerves which supply the muscles used to conduct food into the stomach may be damaged and cause poor contraction of the oesophagus. The result is a more immobile tube and patients may complain of food getting stuck or taking a long time to go down.
