A few patients do have true inflammation in their joints, and occasionally there is an overlap with rheumatoid arthritis. Waxing and hand exercises help but drugs such as methotrexate may be necessary. NSAIDs [non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs] such as voltarol or celecoxib may also help but should be used with caution in scleroderma as they can exacerbate stomach problems.
