In the early stages of the disease excess tissue inflammation and fluid causes feelings of stiffness and can result in patients being unable to make a fist properly. This stiffness is usually self-limiting and will disappear once the disease has been treated or is less active. However waxing, hand exercises and soaking in warm water with an aromatherapy oil e.g. marjoram will soothe and relax the hands. Simple painkillers like paracetamol may help.
